Miami Playa itself is a small commercial Spanish town with a main street (N340) running through the centre of it and a number of side streets. In Miami, you will find bars (mainly Spanish), restaurants, pizza, ice cream parlours and commercial shops ranging from supermarkets (InterMarché and a number of others) through to furnishing and hardware stores.

For sports Miami Playa and the ares nearby offers numerous possiblities such as surfing, sailing, water ski, tennis, squash, golf & mini golf, mountainbiking and fishing.

Close to Miami Playa are a number of attractions including Universal Studios Port Aventura and Costa Caribe (one of the biggest water parks in Spain). Both of these parks are a favourite of the children and are regularly featured on many holiday programmes. Port Aventura and Costa Caribe are 15 minutes by car. If horse riding is your thing then we suggest that you head for the mountains.

Practical Information

The nicest beach for young children in Miami is the Playa Crystal. It is a sandy beach with clear blue water and a sandy, no rock floor. There are bars and restaurants scattered along the length of the Seafront promenade, a children’s park facing the sea and in the height of the summer there are trampolines, ice-creams kiosks and bars scattered along the beach itself. This is a beach which is never packed. There is always space to spread out and even in August, the busiest time of the year, you can position yourself at the waters edge. The beach is kept very clean. Sundowners and deck chairs are available throughout the summer for a small charge, although you are advised to take your own parasol. There are plenty of bars and restaurants where you can either snack or have a full meal. The quality of food and service is good in the majority of the beach front restaurants in Miami.

La Cassola del Seny - further along the beach towards Hospitalet, offers a varied menu. The service is good as is the food. During week days you can take advantage of the menu del dia which offers 3 courses (set menu) with wine, water and coffee for between 9 – 14 Euros. They also do take away pizzas which are very popular and competitively priced. NOTE It is not usual for there to be no smoking areas in the restaurants in Spain, and nor do many provide highchairs for children. Despite this the general attitude to children in Spain is one of tolerance and it is no unusual for children to be eating in restaurants with their parents until midnight! The bars and restaurants along the promenade are very traditionally Spanish (you won’t find any fish and chips on offer and pints of beer). Most menus are available in Spanish, French, German and Catalan. Not all are available in English. There are many coves that can be accessed too. These are at the entrance to Miami Playa from Cambrils (under the railway) and are only accessed by steps.

Supermarkets

There are several supermarkets in Miami Playa, the largest being Intermarche which you will find on the left hand side of the national road heading towards Hospitalet. It can get very busy and crowded in the height of the summer. It does have a good size fresh fish, meat and fruit and vegetable counter. If you are planning to pay with a credit card in the supermarket you WILL NEED a form of ID, usually a passport, and remember that the majority of the smaller shops close between 1.30 and 5.00 for the siesta. They do stay open until 8 or 9. The largest supermarket in the area is in Reus and is the Carrefour. It sells food, clothes, electrical, DVD’s, CD’s, bicycles and so on.

Medical

The nearest hospital is in Reus. The chemists in Spain ( Farmacia) will usually be of much help should you need medication for a sore throat, tummy upset etc. Antibiotics in Spain can be bought without a prescription. Within Miami there are doctors and dentists who you can visit – some of them speak English, some of them don’t. It is worth familiarising yourself with where they are based and when they are available.

Tourist Information

There is a small tourist information kiosk in Miami but the best office can be found in Hospitalet. They do speak English and are very helpful. It is worth visiting them at the beginning of the holiday as you can pick up discount vouchers for the main attractions and details of local walks in the mountains. Bikes are available for hire in Miami Playa.
